Financial Controller

About the position:

BSG has commenced a retained search for a Controller for our client, a leading supplier of lithium-ion battery systems for electric cars, trucks, and buses. As a turnkey battery supplier, they provide their customers with a bridge from design to manufacturing. Their mission is to provide state-of-the-art battery solutions that meet the challenge for a seamless transition to a zero-emission lifestyle. Founded in 2009, they have over 2000 employees, with operations in 3 countries in 15 locations across 3 continents.

The Position – Controller

This individual will report to the US President with a dotted line to the Corporate CFO, who is located in China. He or she will partner to develop and implement the division’s strategy by evaluating and developing financial plans and economic modeling. This person is responsible for leading and overseeing all fiduciary responsibilities for the division to drive business results. With a strong background in financial planning and analysis, the Controller ensures continuous search for simplification by maintaining knowledge of and the use of the company’s financial and operating data and business intelligence and ERP tools. This role is remote, with two weeks international travel each quarter.

About the Job

  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of business financial information based on the information, with a focus on product pricing.
  • Work closely with the President and international leadership team to identify potential problems or deficient areas in operations.
  • Prepare cost proposals and develop costing sheets for projects.
  • Develop channels for working capital.
  • Analyze FOREX strategies.
  • Maintain and oversee material price indexing.
  • Perform customs reconciliation for intra-company transfers.
  • Oversee all accounting functions including AR, AP, contractual payments, and contract review.
  • Report accurate financial information and reconcile US and India operations to China HQ.
  • Assist with IPO and public financial reporting.
  • Coordinate and review external auditor work.
  • Effectively communicate and coordinate the exchange of financial information (e.g., plans, actual results, and outlook) to key stakeholders.
  • Lead annual budgeting process for the division.
  • Explain data to management to drive business decisions and deliver short and long-term forecasting.
  • Provide strategic recommendations based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis. Responsible for invoicing on new deals.
  • Contribute to the vision and implementation of strategic plans, capital investments, acquisitions, restructuring projects, and critical ad-hoc opportunities.
  • Build cross-department credibility, confidence, and collaboration with other functional areas.
  • Help with mergers and acquisitions’ target diligence and post-acquisition integration.
  • Multi-business line financial responsibility, EBITDA reporting, and cash generation reporting.
  • Provide measurable and accurate financial targets to evaluate the financial performance of the business.

What You Have

  • Five years of experience in financial planning and analysis, cost reduction, inventory control, tracking and managing costs against a budget, and tracking P&L results required, preferably within a manufacturing organization or the automotive industry.
  • BS/BA degree in Accounting or Finance-related field required; CPA and MBA are not required but would be a plus.
  • Ability to excel at MS Excel and be able to do deep data analyses with complex spreadsheets.
  • Demonstrated ability to be the business partner/advisor to the GM/President. Strong influence and collaboration skills.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment, translating KPIs into immediate improvement actions, decreasing costs/increasing revenue.
  • Knowledge of how to bid on a proposal—costs, metrics, analyzing the numbers for profitability.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain objective and independent as a guardian of good business practices and controls while also able to troubleshoot and manage the risks inherent in growth initiatives that support division strategies.
  • Ability to write and review a proposal and contract from an accounting perspective.
  • Strong IT knowledge with excellent computer skills (Microsoft and general ledger applications).
  • Experience working with information technology and ERP systems required.
  • Ability to work in an international environment and to coordinate with multicultural teams.

Compensation is competitive with the position’s requirements. In a performance-based environment, this will include base salary and bonus structure based on corporate qualitative and quantitative strategic KPIs.
